How to use a timer while cooking
Read the recipe’s starting point, prepare the timer, and move through each cooking step in order.
Read the duration and its starting point
Find the step you are about to perform and check both its duration and the event that starts it. “After adding the ingredients” and “after returning to a boil” are different starting points. Keep the relevant instruction visible so you can start at the right moment.
Use the recipe or package directions for the food, quantity and method you are preparing. Choose a preset that matches that duration, or enter the required hours, minutes and seconds in Custom. Check any separate instructions about temperature or doneness before you begin.
Prepare the display before handling ingredients
Set the duration and check the digits. Add a short label such as “resting — check next step” if it helps distinguish the task. Put the device where you can see the display without reaching across a hot or wet work area.
Use Test sound and check where it plays: a connected headset or Bluetooth device may receive the sound instead of the kitchen speaker. Then leave the chosen timer ready until the recipe’s starting event.
- Check the displayed hours, minutes and seconds.
- Keep the label short enough to recognize at a glance.
- Place the device within view and away from heat and splashes.
- Test the intended audio output before your hands are occupied.
Follow a step that calls for a five-minute wait
Suppose your recipe says to wait five minutes after completing a particular step. Open the five-minute setting first, finish that step, then press Start when the waiting period begins. This keeps setup time from being counted as part of the wait.
During the wait, prepare the utensils or materials needed next. When the timer finishes, read the recipe’s next instruction and carry out its check or action.
- Before the step: prepare the five-minute display.
- At the start of the wait: press Start.
- While waiting: lay out what the next step needs.
- At zero: return to the recipe and proceed as directed.
Give simultaneous processes separate timers
If one pan is cooking while another item rests, use separately labelled device timers or a suitable multi-timer. Record what each timer refers to and when its process began, so the first alarm does not become a cue to stop everything.
This app has one active mode. Switching to the stopwatch pauses the countdown, and selecting another duration replaces the active countdown. Keep this page on its assigned step and use another timer for an overlapping process.
Keep the time reference when interrupted
Heat, steeping and resting continue even when you are interrupted or pause the display. If you need to step away, keep the existing time reference. If you accidentally reset, check any recorded starting time and the actual state of the step before deciding what to do next.
If the alarm was missed or the starting time is uncertain, use the recipe’s stated checks, including temperature or other food-safety checks where required. A completed countdown alone cannot establish that food is ready or safe.
Set the next step when the current one ends
Have the next instruction and necessary tools ready. After checking the current step, choose the next duration and start it at its stated event. The app does not automatically advance through recipe steps or sound separate alarms for an internal schedule.
Keep the page open and device awake. A locked phone, closed tab or sleeping computer may not deliver a browser alarm; use a separate device alarm when the reminder matters. If the sound test fails, resolve it before starting hands-on work.
